If the last 12 months have taught us anything, it’s that dentistry has truly embraced webinar technology. We may have started slowly, but the latest examples are really pretty good, so Dental Life thought it would be a good moment to take a look back on the cannon of webinars released since last April and see which eight you might want to have with you if you were to be washed up alone on a desert island.

So, move over Lauren Laverne, here’s Dental Life’s castaway countdown…

Mouth care for head and neck cancer patients – a dental practice perspective – Ben Atkins
Brought to the profession by Update Webinars as part of a series to coincide with Mouth Cancer Action Month last November, Dr Ben Atkins brings his own engaging style to a very serious subject. The incidence of head, neck and throat cancer is rising steeply and is set to become one of the fastest growing cancers in the UK. This webinar provides a timely reminder of the practical ways in which dentists and their teams can be a real support for patients in a time of great need.

SDF and redefining dentistry – Professor Raman Bedi and Dr Andrew Osafo
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) received loads of attention last year as a fast yet reliable solution for treating hypersensitivity. During the first lockdown last spring SDF was catapulted into prominence and recommended in official guidance as a non-aerosol procedure to provide patients with immediate relief. Some commentators also use SDF in a caries prevention capacity and it’s licenced for this use in a number of countries. In this webinar, Professor Raman Bedi and Dr Andrew Osafo explain the background, clinical application and benefits of SDF. These high-profile speakers provide a thorough overview and a clinically persuasive argument.

Comfortable dentistry, talking, techniques & tips – Dr Barry Oulton
Barry Oulton, aka The Confident Dentist, is always excellent value for money and in this webinar he does not disappoint. Teaming up with possibly an unlikely partner in Septodont, Barry uses his own inimitable style to deliver a two-part webinar, which aims to provide tips on how to deliver ‘amazing injections’! Barry is well known for his use of NLP (neuro linguistic programming) and is a keen proponent of understanding the wants and needs of patients. In this webinar he helps dentists face up to one of the biggest barriers to patient acceptance – injections. With great ideas, a novel approach and engaging delivery this is definitely worth an hour of your time.

In this webinar he takes the audience on a journey through the relevance of data, patient communication and optimising the appointment book, all with the aim of ensuring dentists are in the best possible place when it comes to the expected surge in demand. Tooth Whitening & Sensitivity – Dr Linda Greenwall
No self-respecting dental webinar collection would be complete without some input on tooth whitening and who better to listen to than a world-leading expert who has built a highly successful south London practice based on this treatment. Covering the evaluation of patients and management of bleaching related sensitivity, Linda also tackles the thorny subjects of ‘how white is white enough?’ and how to convince patients that whitening should be the preserve of the dental practitioner, rather than the beauty salon. Essential viewing for any dentist wanting to make the art of whitening part of their practice.

We see Dr Sherman treating patients with expert care and consideration and although this may not be the dental public relations team’s finest hour, you should console yourself with the fact we didn’t recommend ‘Marathon Man’!
